Purple flowers?
« on: February 02, 2014, 09:25 »
My 3 yr old daughter says she wants to grow purple flowers in the raised bed she's been given in our polytunnel.

Can anyone recommend a variety that can be grown from seed?

TIA

Annuals are: platycodon, campanulas, delphinium, heliotrope, lobelia, lupin, pansies, petunia, violas. Perennials are: nepeta (catmint), phlox, drumstick primula, perennial sage, stokesia, thalictrum, tradescantia. Just have a look at what is on the shelves, and some mixtures like campanulas can be bought as single-coloured.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I was trying to think of purple flowered vegetables, I have some purple podded Mangetout Shiraz but can't find out what colour the flowers are.

Purple potatoes would also thrill her. Same with burgundy podded beans (that blanch green).

Thanks for all the help!

Just going through all GG's suggestions.  Will show Mariela images and let her choose.

Purple beans, particularly dwarf beans - I get a great crop from them every year.  Ones like purple queen or tepee.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Some great suggestions and thanks v much.  Very kind of you all!!!

I'll get some seeds this week and start something off.  Not sure what yet but looks like she'll have the purple flowers after all.  Won't let flowers take over the PT though...it's supposed to be growing lots of lovely veg and strawbs etc.

Ta to all!!!

If you want some veg, then there are purplish-leaved leeks (someone on here knows the variety), red cabbage has a purply bloom on its leaves, purple carrots, purply-red tomatoes, some potatoes have purple flowers, plus beans as has been suggested.

D T Brown has some leeks called Northern Lights whose leaves go purply in winter, especially if it's cold. There seeds are p+p free too.
