Purple flowers to partner marigolds
« on: July 25, 2011, 22:15 »
After quite a few years of not growing marigolds this summer I have fallen in love with them again.I think the slug/snail free drought we had helped them establish really well.
I love the ones i've got which are called 'neon'.Thinking forward to next year I think they'd go really well with a purple flower(I love an orange /purple combination).any ideas of a flower that would fit the bill?

I always grow calendula Neon on my plot but I put it with red cabbages!  It looks gorgeous and I urge you to try it

If red cabbage is out of the question it looks very nice with nasturtium Empress of India or escholzia 'Red Chief (Californian poppy)

On the purple blue theme there is a pansy called Jolly Joker 2 which is purple and orange. It is easily raised from seed. I have them all over the place  :)

I had Ageratum growing last year alongside the vibrant marigolds. Sorry I can't recall exactly which one, I may have a note somewhere, but they were one of the more purple on the colour palette and they had the tufty flowers (I don't think they all do). :)

It looked great! :D

What about chives, or maybe a dwarf lavender? You can eat them! Lavender's lovely with lamb, and chives flowers look good in a salad.

I think chives might have given up before the marigolds had really got going but lavender would be good.I also saw a lovely display of verbena boronie£&*&%$nsis(I can't remember the correct spelling ) they might also fit the bill as might verbena rigida.Heliotrope is another one that's come to mind. Thanks for the ideas ,keep them coming :D

I've seen lots of blue cornflowers next to orange marigolds (calendula) - looks amazing!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Great ideas so far maybe there could be some sort of thingy (technial term) for plants that go together well but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn't it

Osteospermums.  Buy one plant now and take cuttings for next year.  NOt sure if the height would be compatable though.  Pansies another idea.

I've seen lots of blue cornflowers next to orange marigolds (calendula) - looks amazing!

I started off with this colour scheme in mind, supposedly to edge the onion bed  :)

Ended up with the onions swamped completely by the marigolds, and only 2 cornflowers. Looks great and the insects love it -- shame about the onions

Know how you feel Sunshine.  I haven't planted any flowers on the plot this year but from last years self seeders I have borage, calendula, love in the mist, chamomile and nasturtiums   Have pulled out the ones really in the way, but can't bring myself to yank all of them out.

Cerinthe is another lovely blue/purply hardy annual that is dead easy to grow and is worth considering Sion  :)
