« on: March 16, 2010, 13:38 »
Silly question but we have our potatoes chitting at the moment and after reading various books i'm still not sure how many shoots to leave is it 1, 2 or 3? Any help or reccomendations folks?

It is said that fewer sprouts lead to larger but fewer spuds, the opposite being true for planting seeds with more chits.

If you think about it it makes sense: there is a finite limit as to how many tubers a single plant can produce so it probably comes down to how optimistic, greedy (?) or lucky you are given the soil and location you have planted them in (not to mention the weather over the next few months which no-one can do anything about!)

Take your pick (but enjoy the experience whatever happens!)  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

each 'sprout' develops into a new separate plant, so obviously the more sprouts/chits the more plants: the more plants will result in crowded rows and smaller potatoes

I would suggest you leave well alone until they come up and then decide on the spacings - assuming all sprouts/chits establish.
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......
