sprouts
« on: June 12, 2011, 14:21 »
I have recently got an allotment, so I am a newby.

I just wanted to know if it is too late for sprouts, and if not has anyone tried the red sprouts?

Unfortunately you're too late for sprouts this year.

You might be lucky and pick up some plants from a garden center ;)

Regarding the red Brussels sprouts, I grew some one year (Falstaff). The plants grew OK & quite tall, but I was very disappointed with the size of the sprouts, I'd say about 1/4 of the volume of the standard green ones grown at the same time.

This, of course, could just have been me, but they were all sown and the same time and grown together.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My daughter grew them last year and they were very pretty, like blown sprouts with pink frilly edges. Tasted OK stir fried... kind of less 'cabbagey' than normal sprouts, if you see what I mean.  :D :D

Too late to grow them from seed but sprout seedlings are still easily obtainable from Garden Centres 'round here. So definitely not too late.

I planted mine only yesterday - grown from seed and pretty big plants already.

I agree that it's not too late if you can get plants, but don't take it as gospel that if you can buy something from a garden centre that the time is right. We've seen a few posts on here about plants sold way out of season.

The brussels seeds I bought this year say on the pack to sow by midsummer for autumn/winter use, which I'd take as July. They are a semi-dwarf variety, Long Island Improved, but they're supposed to reach maturity in 90 days.
