Hello.  Just buy the best you can afford.  You really don't need to spend too much these days.

Well.. for what it's worth, I've always used Spear & Jackson, always found them reliable and good tools to use. I bought a new fork recently, set me back £23, but then a week or so later popped into my local Makro, and the same one was there for £9.99+vat

I ditched the traditional spade a few years back my weapon of choise now is an American style long handle spade, far easier to dig with than the traditional short job. Mines similar to the £28 job in this LINK after that spend what you can genuinely afford.

I also have a stainless fork (from Aldi or Lidl) that's hard to beat for general use lifting spuds etc.

I just use a mid range spade and fork for both my allotment and for my landscaping work.  No need to spend mpre than a tenner on each.

Dont go for the cheapest though, wont last 5 minutes!

Been looking for a few weeks now and went for the st/st wilkinson £24 it was the only one I could find with a flange to put your foot on.My old spade had them and I think they help a lot when the ground is hard.

Burgon and Ball are strong and well made, probably the best strongest stainless steel spades you will get. Bulldog are the only firm to make solid forged spades in the UK. Spear and Jackson stainless steel spades and forks are welded and made in the far east now, but obviously serve some well, their professional range is fairly strong. Look for solid forged tools if you want them to last with ash handles.

Saying all this my best spades have been bought second hand from an era when spades were made properly and finshed properly so they had a sharp edge and polished head rather than painted or stainless. I seem to be a bit of a spade bore so I shall shut up now.

I agree with you, the long handled spades a great bit of kit.

Funny isn't it, I tried a long hasndled spade but couldn't getused to it at all, good for digging deep holes though, justall went wrong when I tried to double dig evenly, I felt like a convict digging holes in the desert in America.
