Funny isn't it, I tried a long hasndled spade but couldn't getused to it at all, good for digging deep holes though, justall went wrong when I tried to double dig evenly, I felt like a convict digging holes in the desert in America.

  to double dig I use the long handle to dig and clear the trench, then a fork to turn over the subsoil.

Im liking the long handle richy...to look at anyway
But as a 5'4" girly, would it be a bad idea for me?
Im not too keen on normal spades, the 'lady'ones are too small and the normal ones too big
Im meaning height wise by the way

More handle height gives you more leverage, I've just looked at the link again I think their long handled spade is shorter than mine
I can't see that your height would be a problem Paula, if you where nearer you could have had a go with mine ... still got the winter digging to do

I'm also a fan of the long handled spade/shovel, its not only the US where they are used, but most of the world!

Bought my last one at "Focus" about 3 years ago, about 16 quid, see their near 20 now tho

I found this site that has a good range from cheap to high tech.
The spade from S&J with the tread in the middle looks good to avoid back ache, seems to make sense the centre tread idea.
I have an S&J neverbend fork and spade and it is great, stong and reliable.
