Colin is going the right way to end up as a stew
« on: March 08, 2008, 18:41 »
 He chased one of the new hens around the orchard and got her cornered as she tried to hide under the log pile- her head was well under her behind sticking out-  Colin was pecking at her. It was th enoise of his chasing her that drew my attention- she was frantic.  I chased Colin away and got the new hen out, she was ok- no sign of wounds- so I let her go and she ran towards her pals.  Any more of this behaviour and Colin will be like the neighbours cocks- 6€ per kilo :x

My neighbour said this evening that Colin needs to become a stew.... but I couldn´t eat him!    I´d have to give him to the neighbours! She said that we ate the cock she killed, that was different- he wasn´t ours!  :)  Jim said when he went to get some wood at dusk Colin was chasing the hen again. The same one, we have 1 darker than the others.  Do you think he should ´go´Aunt Sally?  Would the hens be better without him?  Do you think he is the problem the bigger hens are not friends with the younger ones?  When we introduced the 2nd lot of older hens the existing hens (3) were no problem after a day. Does Colin having his harem make it worse?

Why don't you separate him from the hens for a few days and see if they settle down without him around "bothering" them

I did think about that Aunt Sally, I will ask my neighbour if I can put Colin in her spare hen cage for a day or so. See what happens, if the girls settle down.

Can you get bromide for cockerals?

Failing that how about a blow-up chook?

He wasn´t trying to mate from what I could see, he was just attacking the new hen.  I did throw an orange at him- missed though :x never was a good thrower :(
