Second hand Greenhouse Saga
« on: February 18, 2007, 09:54 »
So yesterday we made our way down the road to dismantle our first greenhouse!

It started out paintstakingly slow until we found out a quicker way to release the W clips holding the glass in place!

It then poured down so we had to stop and need to go back today.

We have all the glass out bar one side of the roof as some bright person decided to sillicone it all in so we have to try and cut that away today which should be fun!

Then we have the job of dismantling the frame  :(

Hubby said he would have rather I spent £400 to have one delivered and assembled

A little folding chair... in the green house... for those thinking moments.  :tongue2:

A stanley knife is probably the easiest way to get the siliconed glass out.

Do read my article, if you haven't already, as I tried to pass on what I did wrong and how I would have done it given a second chance.

The old boy next door to me had a huge greenhouse with a arm chair and kettle in there for when he argued with his wife  and wanted some piece

and a bit safer than a stanley knife

We used a snap off craft knife and they came away a treat from the silicone!

Now in our garden we have a pile of aluminium strips that resemble nothing and a pile of glass (all in tact I may add)

It will take an age to put together again, we went to the garden centre to get some new W & Z clips oooh and a huge supply of new bolts as we lost quite a few when they snapped off dismantling it!!

Hubby is at work all week and the impatient person that I am I will probably try and assemble it myself! well the frame anyway, don't fancy decapitating myself, will it be possible to do this myself.

you should be able to make the sides and ends on your own, putting them together is a 2 person job really

Company is good!

Our greenhouse was new and with a full set of instructions and with hubby an engineer and me a science teacher it still took both of us and a couple of "discussions" to work it all out!

In the end it was a straight forward but time consuming job.  However we got it right first time because we could discuss the issues and correct them at an early stage rather than later (involving much more undoing and redoing of work).

So even if tempted - I'd wait!

You're not the only one at it, I picked up my second hand greenhouse today.  Not free unfortunately, but for £40 off ebay wasn't too bad.

Broke a few panes in transit which is a shame, one of them is the triangle shaped roof piece which might be a bit of a problem.  But thankfully I got about 30 free panes off freecycle today anyway from someone else.

All i've got to do now is tackle the issue of getting the base in, and then somehow bang back into shame a couple of slightly twisted ridges, let's hope it works and will be up and growing chillies in no time!!
