Runner beans oh dear,,
« on: March 19, 2011, 19:09 »

We had them in a sealed coffee jar in the shed since October cos we thought they'd dry out nicely that way

The bottom half is filled with beans that are soft and not very dry.  The top half our jar consists of solid mould.  Ooops!

I expect these will now have to be thrown.  :(

Oh dear indeed.  I think you're right  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Mmmmm, sounds like you got some condensation in the jar!  Best thing (bit late I know) is air dry them on trays, then when dry pop them into a paper bag.  I then keep mine in a cardboard box.

I've got more chance of success growing a sausage tree than getting anything from these beans then?  Gutted!  Never mind, maybe I'll try and grow some red ones this year instead.

Let me know if you're taking cuttings from the sausage tree - we'd like some to go with our eggs!  :D :tongue2:

:D :D Reminds me of when I was at the garden centre with my little boy (2 and a half). I was getting some potatoes and asked him what else he would like to grow on the allotment. He looked up, paused and said "Ahmm.....thausages". Made me laugh out loud.  :D

We thought about that jonewer, do you mean the beans or the mould mush, or both?  We held back though in case beans start growing in our compost pile.

I think we can safely say that these beans will not grow.

Nothing will dry out in a sealed container as there's nowhere for the moisture to evaporate to. Only thoroughly dried seed should be stored in airtight packaging.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I remember when I was a kid my dad bought an ancient black Ford to do up. It had been rusting in a farmyard and when we cleaned it out inside we found some ancient runner beans. It must have been dry enough....
They grew!!!
(No, the name's not Jack....beanstalk....geddit?  :D)
I think your mouldy ones have had it.
