Insect nets and weeding
« on: May 05, 2017, 13:56 »
Fellow Gardeners,

I think I have asked this question before but if I did it was for fleece. I have  placed some insect netting over my leeks and carrots but I now have to weed them. How is the best way of going about this without letting in any insects? Should I uncover the plants bit by bit or is there a particular time when the pests are less likely to be around?

Dusk and dawn, but not many of us are up at the plot then. Also when it's raining tends to lessen the carrot fly floating around.
In practice, I just lift it off, and do what I can in a bout 20 minutes. I can soon see if a fly or cabbage white/diamond back have invaded. The danger is not weeding at all, or not enough, just because the net is there and you don't want to disturb it. Been there. Two weedings in a crop cycle is all that is needed in my opinion. Little extra harm will come our way in half an hour during the whole season, given that the nets always seem to let the odd blighter in anyway.

I don't take the net right off but lift a section at a time on the lengthwards edge. reduces the opportunities for insects to invade
