Planting parsnip seed
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:29 »
I have been sent some nice fresh parsnip seeds and wonder when is the best time to plant them up.  Bearing in mind I live in Spain and the summer temperature reaches  35deg  or some days.  Would I be better to wait until September or October?
Thanks
Pamela

PS  no use asking my neighbour who grows veg, they don´t have parsnips here

When do people plant carrots over there? My gut feeling would be to put them in  - you may have to water more than usual for root veg - if they dont do well try again in September. But if you wait to plant late and they do not do well you have wasted a year.

I used to plant swede at the end of August when I was growing on Zakynthos (Greek Ionian Island) if that helps at all.

They used to grow right through the mild winter for eating in Jan and Feb  ;)

Bit of a tricky one - although parsnips are said to have originated in the mediterranean area, I have also read that they don't like too much heat in summer!   ::)

Having got the seed I'd still be tempted to give them a go - have you got somewhere that gets at least some shade, and what are your water supplies likely to be like this summer?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I'd plant them now. Do let me know if you get an acceptable crop. Dad has a smallholding in the Alentejo and none of the British ex-pats that I've come across down in that part of Portugal manage to get a worthwhile crop. They get something, but usually give up after 2-3 years.

That will be in a tub on the patio then!!  The garden has no shade at all in summer, or winter come to that!
I will give them a shot at putting them in in September, the weather is still good, not horridly hot and they should get at least 3 months of good weather before winter starts.  We might be lucky and have rain by then.  Our wet season is now over, since last October we have had 6 days when we have had rain, our well isn´t that full.
Thanks for your suggestions
Pamela
