Easter chick
« on: April 19, 2014, 16:35 »
Here we have our first naturally hatched chick which arrived this morning. 'Mum' Cagney is being great and my liking for her has deepened since she became broody. What a good girl.

Sorry the pic is a bit out of focus and dark, didn't want to disturb

They are gorgeous, she has already had them out and all the neighbours have been in to inspect.

We are spending a lot of time watching them as they grow up so fast and soon lose their looks. Mum being a big girl who strides out, they have a job keeping up sometimes. I can't believe how fast those little legs go!

They aren't actually her's, they are Shumens, blue and black. We have separated the Shumens (OH's project) and my layers as I will be selling any surplus eggs and anyway have far to many hens for Sevi to cope with! The chap who gave us our original five last year has had all sorts of illnesses, deformoties etc but didn't mention it when he gave them to us so we can't breed from them, only two left anyway. Cagney was boss from the beginning and is a great mother. I've never had a hen with chicks and find it quite an emotional experience.

very cute, I have a new surrogate mum today, one black silkie chick hatched out, one (who knows what) on its way and 4 more 'who knows whats', to hopefully come as well.  cant wait for them to emerge properly form under mum have only had glimses so far.
