what breed are my chickens?
« on: July 14, 2013, 08:54 »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what breed my chickens are. I have looked online but I'm still not sure. I've attached a pic- I know it's not very clear but it'd be great if anyone could take a look.

I believe that one (daisy) is a white star.
Two are what I would describe as 'normal' brown hybrid type chickens but Superman has black feathers near her bum and Happy Mrs Chicken has white feathers near her bum.
Julia has darker, fancier feathers.

Also- Julia and Superman are not laying yet- presumably they are just a bit too young- ??? don't know if anyone can tell the age from the photo?
thanks
Alison.

White hybrid, brown hybrid and what could be a Black Rock, which again in a brown hybrid variant. They should lay plenty of lovely eggs for you  :)

The darker brown one looks like a Welsummer so you should get lovely dark brown eggs from her.  I think the one with a black tail could be a rhode island red crossed with a light sussex, it would lay mid brown eggs.  From what I can see their combs and wattles look quite red so hopefully you won't have long to wait for eggs.   ;)

I will pop this topic on to Hen House and hopefully more people will be able to identify them for you.

Mmmm I agree that the darker brown one does look like a welsummer!  the ordinary brown one will be something like an ISA, warren, Bovans brown, (all the same thing really) and the white one a white star.

Is there a 4th?  I can only see 3 in the pic!

There is a fourth in the bottom right hand corner.   ;)

Ahhhh, the pic was too big so I only got a bit of it.  Can't see one that looks like a black rock though.   Just the welsummery one, 2 browns and a white.

the one with the black tail looks like a columbian black tail which is a rhode island red cross
Staffies are softer than you think.

I didn't think Columbian blacktails had those markings round the neck like the welsummer does.

Not the ones I've seen anyway.

I think joyful means the brown hen behind the Welsummer one, it has black tail feathers.   :)
