Badgers have eaten my sweetcorn
« on: August 15, 2013, 17:55 »
When I got up to the new plot found that I had a visitor who had destroyed my sweetcorn . Mr Badger had enjoyed a very healthy late supper. He had ignored previous sweetcorn last season on the old plot.Must on his flight path on the new one. Ignored the sweetcorn either side of me . Better like next  time

Are you sure it was badgers?

The reason I asked is because despite heir diminutive size, voles can quickly decimate a sweetcorn plot, chewing through the stalks, eating the cobs and carrying away grains to their store, as well as eating the pith of the main stalk itself.

In large numbers they wreak enormous damage.

Badgers usually cannot resist digging, especially in nice soft soil, looking for worms and beetles, and usually leave droppings that are quite visible too

This happened to most plots on our site last year. There were various culprits blamed including faxes, rats (huge ones apparently)) and badgers. In most cases the plants were stripped of cobs that were then eaten clean of kernels and often the plants were knocked to the ground. I have seen similar damage at RHS Rosemoor some years ago when badgers were blamed.
I think badgers are probably the culprits here as they are present around here but whatever does the damage there isn't a lot we can do expect put barriers around the crop and hope.
