Too many Mange Toute and Sugar Snaps
« on: July 02, 2014, 14:43 »
We are finding it nearly impossible to keep up with the mange toute and sugar snap varieties of peas we having growing this year and are letting some of them mature to pea sized peas and podding as an actual pea and composting the pods.

Some - especially mange toute - taste a bit woody as they are not designed to be eaten as a pea I know, but they are do-able. Sugar Snaps are better, but less peas to the pod compared to proper peas.

My question I suppose is - is there a mange toute or sugar snap that anyone can recommend that is serviceable as a pea if we meet the same glut again next year?

We have Sugar Ann and a Mange Toute pea we bought from B&Q simply called "Mange Toute".

- do you blanche sugar snaps before freeing Mum? I seem to remember they didn't taste too nice when we tried some frozen ones.

Last year I had loads and blanched them for a minute - this year I've had so few that I've just bunged them in as they are - cos they won't be in there for long  :D

We just blanch snaps for 20-30 secs, drain in a colendar, pat dry with kitchen roll, spread on a tray and put it in the freezer. When frozen the next day, then we bag them up. Maybe you could try that with MTs.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
