And now I have a dead hen too
« on: October 08, 2008, 12:06 »
Just after I buried chick I went to see if there were any eggs (3) and there was one of my big hens dead.  At first I thought she was sunbathing again, but this time she really was dead     Not a good day today.  And I found a dead mouse too on the patio (I can cope with a dead mouse).
The day can only get better

Aww, I'm sorry to hear this, Pamela.   I'm wondering when I'll be having to deal with the death of any of my flock.  I see them all trying every growing thing in the garden, and I do wonder how they discover which plants are poisonous without getting ill.  I have rhubarb... love the controversy I keep hearing about that plant, which makes delicious pie when mixed with fresh strawberries...  And I've a bed of Anemone plants, which make lovely flowers but are rather weedy... as are the buttercups, which have been taking over my lawn.

I think this fall and winter I'll be digging up all of the more or less untended garden beds here in preparation for growing more food plants here in the coming year.  I've got numerous herbs growing already which I use regularly in my cooking... I notice the chickens have not touched the sage, nor any of the parsley which seems to spring up on its own in all sorts of unlikely spots.  If I see a plant I like I just leave it wherever it's chosen to grow, and it is interesting to see how a garden will develop on its own by this approach.
