I have planted in pots before and transplanted about 2 months after. Worked fine.

Yes to the pots, or simpler, you can simply store outdoors in a box of soil (with drainage) until you have the ground ready.  They will develop roots fairly quickly and can be transplanted with care - anytime up until say New Year(?).  Sooner the better.

If you plan to grow to maturity in containers, you will need deep ones, 18 to 24", since they will be large plants (almost 5ft).

Before I had my allotment I always grew my garlic in pots, didn't get massive bulbs but sure tasted good nonetheless.

I sent Ropster porcelain garlic though and it does grow to nearly 5ft tall.  B-i-g pot needed  :D

A ha, mine was just from the supermarket, grew a few from one head and was rather pleased with myself!  It was purple and really pretty, not very strong, but me being a tightwad was pleased because I'd turned one into about 8!

Just wait until you try real seed garlic. You'll see a big different in size and taste. The varieties in seed garlic are considerable from bland to very hot spicy ones.

I've planted up some at the lottie, or at least I think it was, bought it from Tamar Organics and it's growing nicely at the moment.

WG, do you think they will need wind protection, being so tall, my new plot is very windy( :!:  :!: ).

I don't think so.  My garden is very sheltered but Really Garlicky grows 50 acres of the same stuff in open fields with no shelter.  If you are worried about it, plant some Jerusalem Artichokes on the windy side - not less than 1.5 metres away though.
