should I dig up shallots and replant?

Planted shallots today now realise they are supposed to peep above soil, not be buried 4 inches below.  Does this mean they will be ready later or not at all  ???

As you just planted today, I think you'd better dig up them.

I don't even plant regular onion sets that deep. So yes, it would be better to take them up and plant them more shallow.

I agree with everyone - replant and leave their noses above ground.

But dig up real quick before they start to set roots.
I plant my shallots and Onion sets just below the soil surface so that they don't have to breach the soil to grow but the Blackbirds don't pull them out thinking its a juicy worm.

If you plant them with their noses just showing the birds like to pull them up.

After planting I pull a little ridge of loose soil over them which hides them from the birds. As you hoe later this will fall away.

Last year I grew them for the first time and planted them below the surface but not 4 inches deep. They did ok but were a bit late coming up. I am not growing any this year as I got fed up with the faff of peeling them - very lazy!

I planted mine a couple of weeks ago, and I've planted mine with the tops just below the surface (I just shoved them in, didn't dig them in).  Just to stop any birds pulling them out.
