i often buy the gardening magazines for tips and information and they seem packed with miniature orchard trees for sale.
my question is will the quickly out grow the to keeping them small.
pots they are in and will they get too big.
i know pruning will help control but surly even pruning has limited size control.

i think it depends on the root stock that they are grafted on to

We're not talking bonsai fruit trees here, so if you are so limited for space that you can't find room for an M27 then I'd reconsider trying to grow fruit trees as if they're pruned too much there'll be no fruit

M27 I think is the smallest dwarfing rootstock and will stay small all its life and be ok in a pot about 14" or so and kept in good quality soil based compost and given support. 

They are very small though and won't grow bigger than probably 4 feet tall and wide, maybe less.  I had a Spartan apple and it fruited very well but the pot frozen and it died, just one of the hazards of fruit in pots in the UK

Oh dear! I kept 5 apples trees in their small pots outside over winter... hope they're alright!
