Guinea pig and Rabbit waste?
« on: June 18, 2011, 14:13 »
At the moment i chuck all my guinea pig and rabbit waste in the composter, its a mix of hay, straw, paper and there droppings and of cause pee. What i was wondering is can i use this as a mulch or is it better rotted down in the composter before using, and is there any goodness in there waste?

It's good stuff, but I'd always compost it.
I'm sure there will be different ideas though  :D

The urine is a great source of nitrogen, but it needs to be processed first. In urine it's in the form of urea. You need bacteria to turn that into ammonia, which is in turn oxidized to nitrite and then nitrate. Much better to have that happen in the heap than next to your plants roots.

fully agree it should be composted to get best from it -- one reason is it will help to break down the green stuff but also secondly otherwise the paper in it will blow about.
