How is your sweetcorn doing so far?
« on: July 30, 2011, 09:53 »
The longest-planted of my "2-phase" Swift (2 weeks apart but in blocks planted next to each other to try and improve pollination) are now producing male spikes (tassels) but although the plants are quite sturdy they are at least a foot shorter than they should be (only about 3')

As ever the female "silks" are only just thinking about making an appearance so it's fingers crossed time again!  :)

(Mumofstig can "pass" on this question as I seem to remember she was picking them about a week ago and is probably reading this with a smug grin and butter running down her chin!)  :tongue2:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Minipops probably don't count either, but they're doing just fine thanks and we've been harvesting for a week. :D ;)

Not smug at all...mine are earlier than yours because I'm in the warmer south, that's all *shrugs shoulders*

BUT despite trying "2 phase planting" as well ...............................
inside the cobs there is patchy corn set....from poor pollination :( so everything is not sweetness and light here either :(

Mine are about 4ft tall and hve two cobs set and most have another one coming along. Silks are just beginnign to chnage colour so might risk checking the kernels tomorrow  :D

(Down south though and they are in a nice sheltered spot too  :D :D)

Well smuggy smuggy smug smug smug.  Mine are doing 'quite nicely'.  A new variety not tried before, slightly smaller cobs but filing out nicely considering they were shadowed from the sun by some humungious purple podded peas for quite some time.   P.S. silks just turning brown,       8)    8)     8)     Cheers,   Tony.

I've been growing sweetcorn every year, and this year has been the worst on record.  They have only grown to about 3ft tall (or if you prefer the new version, that's one metre) :(.  I've seen one cob in a total of 30 plants - so basically, that means no sweetcorn this year - ho hum, better luck next year.  That's what I love about this game, you never know

The silks turn a  chocolate brown colour and if you burst a seed with your fingernail the liquid that comes out is like milk.

Thanks for that,  mine are brown, so I'd better go and look at them.

Ditto mine barely a foot tall no a sign of flowers, tassels or anything else cob like yet. They could well be in the compost bin before I see flower or silk. :(

My first year with sweetcorn and I chose Invincible. Plants only about 2 foot high but most have t cobs on. Tried one last weekend and it was OK but not as exciting as I was expecting. Maybe another type next year. Really like to see them growing though. Worth it just for that!
I can remember when it were all fields round `ere.
