Confused about compost and lime
« on: January 28, 2014, 00:35 »
Ok, so I'm endlessly confused about this subject. I know that I'm not supposed to lime and manure at the same time. Got it.

But if I'm going down the no-dig route (spinal surgery made the decision, rather than any kind of principles!), I cover my empty veg beds with normal garden or shop-bought compost (not manure). But my soil's acidic. Can I add lime?  ???

I see no reason why lime and compost can't be added together (you might actually find some shop bought compost already has it added)

The usual objection to liming and manuring at the same time is that the lime reacts with the nitrates in the manure releasing ammonia gas, which is therefore lost to the air.

Not nearly such a problem if one or the other (or both) is dug into the soil first, because ammonia is soluble in water and will mostly be retained by the soil water and converted back to nitrates.

If you can't dig at all, I'd put the manure on top of the lime rather than the other way round, which should minimise the loss.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - manure is best thought of as a soil conditioner rather than a fertiliser, and I've read that if applied in autumn up to 80% of the nitrogen it contains will be lost over winter anyway.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

As you're not using manure, there is no problem ;)

I'd lime and then add the compost   :)

Sorry Kajazy, I missed you saying you were using compost rather than manure - the same thing applies though, both home-made compost and bought compost contain at least some nitrates, although some might dispute how much nutrient content there actually is in some bought MP composts these days!  ::)  ;)
