feeding egg shells
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:05 »
hiya all,
im getting my first chucks this wkend, and when i went to pet food place i was passed on a piece of advice:

when u have used your eggs, crush the egg shells up and add back into the chucks food to help strengthen future eggs shells

does anyone agree / disagree with doing this? i guess it doesnt just 'sit' right with me

thanks

I've never done it, find it's best to stick with oyster shell & grit :)

It can be done but I think you have to bake them in the oven first?

I shall go have a look see what I can find :)

There is some info here :

Hi annie,
we wash and then bake our egg shells until they can be ground down and fed back to the girls- but by the time you've ground it there isn't much there so it doesn't go far!  ???

We've never done it.  even baked in oven seems not right somehow feeding them back their shells, also doesn't seem worth the effort for such a small amount.  I just put them on the comppost, so the goodness is still going back into the ground.
