Beetroot keeps pretty nicely in cider vinegar!

Carrots : If you don't need the ground, I'd suggest doing what the commercial growers do.   Leave them in the ground until the foliage dies back.  Lay polythene on top.  Cover with straw.   This protects against both winter cold AND spring warmth.   There is a grower here lifting last year's organic carrots now.  They'll be in a Morrison's Supermarket near you tomorrow.

Beetroot : I find that they grow in storage.  Again, you could leave LATER SOWINGS in the drill, mulched with straw until maybe Dec / Jan.  Your winters in Kent are a bit milder than ours so regrowth might be a problem.

... I pulled the last of the beetroot in January.  Regrowth wasn't a problem last year, but I can't say if that will always be the case.

As there's only me, I struggled to get through my 16ft row of beetroot ...   ... and I don't like it pickled.

All in pots and troughs and mini greenhouse in my back garden (3 yr wait for an allotment) - loose leaf lettuce, radish, spring onion, basil, parsley, coriander, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peas and cucumber - and chillis and sweet peppers

In a large chest/planter  -cabbage and sweetcorn

experimenting at the moment - hopefully will have some idea by the time i get my allotment :)
Total beginner - please bear with me if I ask daft questions!!

Boothy, I've just got my allotment this month, but I've had some great crops from pots in the back garden and a raised bed 1.2 x 2.5 m in size in previous years. It's amazing what will grow if well watered and fed.

Quote
Look very carefully before weeding. They are a dirty brown colour, spindly and very hard to see.

Mine were planted outside directly into the bed, I had two brown spindly stems come up about 2 weeks ago, but that's been it, no other stems have appeared, definately no green bits :(

Might try sowing some more in a seed tray outside and see if that does any better, seeing as the seed isn't supposed to keep very well for next year.
