Constructing a walk in run....
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:10 »
Hey guys and gals,

I've decided to build a walk in run for the ladies, approx 12ft by 8ft, framework is 2"x2" timber panels. Where the panels come together the timber will then be effectively 4" across. I know this might sound like a very specific question but those who have already built walk in runs would you recommend using screws or bolts to fix your timber in place? I have a whole pile of screws here but then suddenly thought of bolts at the last moment ha ha! I'm not really planning on moving the run once it's in position so I suppose screws would do but not sure if screws would compromise the timber more?

Thanks

Andy

Anhbuc may be able to help you here as she has just finished building her run - my run is metal so cant help with screws/bolts sorry.
Staffies are softer than you think.

We made ours like a pheasant release pen. I think it's the most expensive run in Staffordshire though!!

Hubby used screws on ours and it's good and solid.  Hope that helps!
No sense in being pessimistic It wouldn’t work anyway.

My husband built our run recently in much the same way - I have just asked him and suggested pilot drill one section with enough clearance for the screw then fix to other section with 3.5" screws.  Our run is very solid.  Hope this helps.

Hi Andy,

We used decking screws as we needed so many and hubby said he will not be moving it after building it.   ::)

We have not made the roof yet as we are visiting our daughter in Oban so made a temporary roof covering with Scaffold debris netting doubled up.  Will update the build photos when we get home.

The girls seemed really happy with their new accommodation apart from Lotty who decided she had enough of her chicks so we put her in a coop with small run.  She was not impressed but it was the easiest option two days before we came away.   ;)

Thanks for the feedback folks! Your run looks fab ANHBUC!

I'm thinking screws, once it's in place I'm not planning on moving the run and I can source decking screws pretty cheap, will post some pics once she's up.
