Best strawberries?
« on: March 29, 2017, 22:01 »
Please does anyone have any recommendations for strawberries? I've only grown Cambridge Favourite previously - very tasty and prolific they are, too, but I just fancy trying something different!

Thanks in advance,

Pim.

Do these have a hollow middle?

I've never had that happen.  I thought that was due to over watering and feeding  - like some of the shop bought hydroponic grown offerings.

Mine are in decent soil in raised beds at home and get some chicken manure pellets chucked at them periodically.  I never water them,  just leave them to it, pick and enjoy  :)

I've always found that regardless of the variety you always get some that taste amazing and others that taste of nothing!

That said, I also grow Marshmello along with a perpetual variety called Buddy. You tend to get less of a glut with perpetual varieties and a longer season, which has it's benefits, but it's nice to grow some non everbearing ones to get the volume in the summer.

Mmmmm!  ::) Thanks, folks - been doing a little research and Marshmello do sound like a good bet! It'd be good to try a perpetual variety too, though, as I invariably end up with a glut and as I'm not keen on jam or frozen strawbs there's always a bit of a waste. I'm moving to a new site and while I've dozens of plants on the old site it's a good chance to start anew. I'll pot up some Cambridge Favourite runners to take with me. Any recommendations for a good everbearer?

I really love the "wild" flavour of Maras de Bois and Flamenco is a heavy cropper with a good flavour.
