Is it too late to split it this year? The early variety is already sprouting.

No it should be fine but give it this year to recover before picking any from either the old root or any new ones & the new ones would be better if given next year before picking.

I transplanted a crown today,I had left it on the surface for a week or so as I read frost is good for the crown

So planted it today put a good helping of well rotted in whilst backfilling
Rhubarb is in my top 5 of favourite produce from my allotment 😁😁
