starting my plot in my back garden

hello,
at the moment my back garden is lawn with 2 fruit trees in the middle,
to have raised beds do i need to clear the grass off or just put the raised bed on top?

just make the frames dig the grass and turn it over then add more soil

now  dig it trench fashion and turn the grass down into the trench bottom in slices ,then add more soil etc

We did as muntjac said when making our raised beds. We have clay and wanted to make use of it. The first bed we used for the last couple of years, we dig in more organic matter each year and add some grit, this first bed is now developing into lovely soil and produces well. We dug the first bed in bad weather because that was when we could do it after moving and didn't want to waste a growing season and were very glad we hadn't waited
