i have 2 different types of peas, twinkle and hurst green shaft, do i need to keep them apart or can i plant them near each other? i have planted different types of beans together no problem so is it the same for peas?
-
If you intend eating the lot there is no problem whatsoever.
If you are saving seed, there is a very, very slight chance of cross pollination. I keep my heritage seed well away from any others.
But for general gardening & eating purposes - go ahead!
-
thanks DD, i thought i would be ok but thought i better check. they will all get eaten, some might even make it home and onto the plate!
-
I have that problem - that's why I grow so many. Come June/July I always go home with stomach ache!
-
DD if you need someone to help you eat those peas..........praps save the belly ache...... I'm not that far down the M1.... :D :D :D

Never had you down as a martyr Dave........Oh well :D :D :D

You mean St David from Chit On Pease? He's famous.
I'll be growing 3 types of peas this year, 2 are heritage and they'll all be separated because I need to build up the planting stock for the heritage ones. Next year I get to eat some of the latter.
-
How far apart should the heritage peas be planted please??
-
I leave at least 2'6" between rows.
-
Oh that's good DD thank you!!!!

I'm eating this year - I hope! Built the stock of one type up from 30 seed to 1,000's! Actually Trill, thinking about it, did I send you them? Memory's not good & I've been to bed since!

Oh dear - I have 2 types of heritage peas and some hurst green shaft. I only have one bed in which to grow them, which is 2-3 yards wide . I was planning on three rows next to each other ... is this a bad idea?
-
Yes Dave, you did send me a regular leafed heritage pea (can't remember name at the moment) and the one with the fern-type leaves. That's why I'm keeping them separate so I can enjoy their individual merits.

Going back to Peapod about "fast-food". How fast do you want, straight of the plant pod them, then eat. 10 secs top? :tongue2:
-
The regular one is "Stokesley" and the unusual one is "Parsley" it's not an unusual leaf shape, but the tendrils are. (They're supposed to be edible by the way).
-
All pea shoots are edible they're nice in salads :) (as well as the raw peas :D)
-
These are the tendrils of "Parsley". There's a fair bit of bulk there & you can see where it gets it's name from.

Its MY fast food...when others laugh at me for having a bad stomach (Im not supposed to eat a lot due to Chrohns!) I always point out its better than a macdonalds ANY day :D :D
If I had to choose my last meal, 10 pounds of fresh peas picked by me would be my starter and dessert (main would be roast lamb dinner) :D

They won't necessarily be true to type. Peas aren't as bad as some (eg runner beans) for cross-pollination, and if the seeds will be for your own use it probably won't be a deal-breaker, but you probably oughtn't pass the seed on to other people as the true strain if you can't isolate them.
