Light Sussex
« on: January 21, 2011, 22:40 »
Hi everyone, thought i would introduce myself as i only joined tonight, seems like a great site. Im due to get some new Light Sussex in the spring but when ive had light sussex before they seemed to always be laying double yolkers. Someone once said that shouldnt happen, are they right or is it in that breed. Ive been keeping hens for 15 years now and it only seems to be them. Should i be concerned.

I've had LS over 10 years from two different strains and never had a double yolk from them.  In fact I don't like to see double yolks as it indicates there's something not quite right in the reproductive system.  An ocassional one is OK but not repeatedly.  The only bird I've ever had which laid double yolkers regularly also died suddenly with an egg laying related problem.  She was a Black Rock.  I think yours must have been an issue with the particular strain you were keeping.

Hi Maureen and welcome, HF is right double yolkers are not the norm and as an egg is hatched with a pre-determined amount of eggs, by laying double yolkers they will use these up quicker. Also double yolkers are larger sized eggs and these can break, get stuck inside or even tear the skin so if I was you I would get my stock from another source.
Staffies are softer than you think.
