Bolting savoy
« on: April 17, 2009, 09:26 »
Hello - having a trip over from the henhouse.  About a half of my savoys have bolted, the others, tho not bolting, are not hearting up. I've only ever grown sping and summer pointy cabbages before, where have I gone wrong? We did have some very cold weather this winter, one spell was -10 overnight and and only up to zero during the day for over a week.
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

Don't know but your're not alone - I didn't get a single spring cabbage, they all bolted.

sorry to hear about your cabbage woes  :(
when did you sow them?  i grew savoys a couple of seasons ago, they were sown in about march time and then the following march any that i hadn't eaten bolted. i assumed that it's normal for them to bolt at that point since they'd been in the ground for a year

I put them in as garden centre plants late summer and expected to be eating them in March  :( but a hard winter held them back.  I am growing from seed this year.

Savoys are bi-annual and it is usual for them to bolt after the Winter. To get them to hart up, most of this is done during the previous Autumn and early Winter.

My savoys were not as big as usual and i think it's because it turned cold very quickly so they didn't get a chance to heart up much before the cold stopped them growing.
Hope the weather is a bit better for them this year

3 out of 6 of my Savoys bolted. Don't know why.
Someone said to me it may be the very wet followed by the very sunny spells we've just had
I just used them as spring greens - still tasted OK
If at first you don't succeed..... cheat!
