Runner beans not setting
« on: July 14, 2009, 17:18 »
I'm growing Armstrong runners which have red flowers. I seem to remember that red flowered types have problems with setting and I have fared better with White Lady in other years but these were recommended for their taste. They have been watered well and had the occasional spray plus we've had showers lately too. They are in full sun in a raised bed with soil enriched with plenty of home-made compost and look jolly healthy.  ???
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

have you had the strong wind that we've had? That keeps the bees away, and knocks the flowers off :( Mine were doing great till it got windy, but got a bit of a lull now.......

I have masses of flowers but only two weeny beans, and the flowers look as though they have been cut off leaving tiny stalks... is this sparrows pecking them off?

Mine are doing the same.  I've changed this year from White Lady because i thought a red variety would give me earlier beans but its not happened. Like sunshineband, i have little beans which don't seem to be growing very fast, and its the village show next week :(

My runners are not doing much either ,got a few small ones from them but with this wind seems to have slowed things down.My dwarf beans however are going mad!!! am gettin a good hand full from them every day and must admit do prefer the taste of them compared to runners.Even better we bought dwarf seeds for 19p a packet and have used 2 packets which is supplying us with enough for a family of 4 :) :)

Yes to the strong winds. I live on the flat near the sea and have a growing beech hedge on the east side and planted broad beans on the west but it still blows enough - that's probably it; however, I am now starting to get baby runners so I'll try Superglue and cross my fingers!!!
