If you could only have one fruit bush....
« on: June 22, 2019, 10:23 »
....what would you choose?

I'm taking out my two (inherited) gooseberry bushes on  the plot as we don't like them and the thorns are a pain for me and my daughter.

So I'm thinking ahead to autumn and trying to decide what to plant instead. My daughter has requested fruit. We already have strawberries and a blackberry bush. And nothing with thorns please.

What plant/variety would you pick?

Raspberries-they aren't strictly a bush but well worth having. I'm not so keen on autumn ones so I would stick with summer ones.

Oh well I was going to say gooseberry (I make a lovely gooseberry & mint jelly). Red currant would be my next choice to make red currant jelly😊

Either a thornless Tayberry or Loganberry, on wires trained between posts. (why on earth doesn't spellcheck like 'thornless'?  ??? )
Once grown they're absolutely laden with fruit for eating fresh, puddings and jam, and they don't spread by runners to take over your plot  ::)

Summer fruiting raspberries. Easy enough to look after, and repay you every year with lovely fruit.
they are so expensive in the shops, and you get so few.
Runners are a nuisance but can be pulled out when young, and can be potted up for others.

next would be a Victoria plum, closely followed by currants, black and or red.

Raspberries for me.  Love to eat them with the heat of the sun on them.

Blueberries.  Two bushes for pollination.  So expensive in the shops.

big fan of red gooseberries and some are less thorny than others ( easier to avoid thorns if train as standards) I also find rasps give very good yield and can be lined up to take least space. Just a thought though - strawberries only at their best for about 3 to 4 years so might be worth using space to start a well prepped and perfectly weed free strawberry patch for planting later in year to give seamless succession.
Enjoy
