check on your squash/pumpkins................
« on: January 24, 2013, 22:15 »
as I found the first one that's started going a bit mushy :(  It's one of the small Harrier butternuts, so I'd best use these up first!

All the others still look ok stored in the cool spare bedroom.

Similar story here.  Got one little gem rolet left to use.  The bigger squashes just sulked and eventually gave up the ghost last year  ::)

Fingers crossed for a bigger haul this year  :)

I've still got two large pumpkins stored in the garage along with three butternut squash (these are very small mind you). I check them regularly and keep thinking I must use the pumpkins, but being so large I want to make sure I don't waste any of It. I guess I will need to take the leap and use them and be creative in how I do that, especially after nurturing the pumpkins last year (my biggest one was stolen).
Any ideas how I can use a large pumpkin??
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

My "uchi kuchi" squashes are keeping far better tham my butternuts.  I have them on a sheldf with the stalk pointing towards me so I can spot mould as soon as it starts and use that butternut.   I may go over to Uchi Kuchies more in the future.

Cheers,   Tony.

The rot started on the bottom end of the butternut!

I've never seen a butternut go mouldy from the blossom end first.  It is always the stalk end with mine.

Cheers,   Tony.

Hey - I thought that wos my name for them!  :D Cant remember or spell the proper name but uchi kuchi sounds cuddly!.

And I have given up on the others, Tony, and next year that is what I am going to grow. Forget the failed butternuts and crown princes  :( :(  They have a long season, coped with drowning last year and drought 2 yrs ago and keep well.  Good size for two of us, I'm not overwhelmed like Yana by the size of them.

Like Snowdrops, I have also used my last Winter Festival squash this week on a delicious soup.  I will miss them now, it made for a delicious lunch!  I can't wait to plant the new ones now!

Thanks for the heads up Mum.  :)

Have mine in the living room on a big platter because they look so nice.  Only have 3 Golden Nuggets and a small Uchiki Kuri left now but I'm amazed at how well they have kept.  Definitely more for me next year.

I noticed that another one has started to get white mouldy spots on the outside! Trimmed all the hard skin off it and the inside was mostly ok :)

You gave me a heart attack.

When I saw the thread title pop up, I thought you were talking about plants!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
