Onions and garlic puzzle!
« on: May 17, 2009, 18:40 »
Just returned home from a weekend with a friend.
She planted red onions and  ??? last October.
The position is rather dark
The previous owner kept chickens in this particular place.
The onions and garlic are extremely leggy, when we dug up samples of both, they resemble Spring Onions - nothing bulbous at all.  They taste of onions and garlic respectively
So any ideas of what has gone wrong.
She is disappointed, but can I am sure use what has grown (oh and should she tie they up for storage  ??? ???

Yep, I don't think you're meant to pull up autumn garlic for another month or two so it's probably not finished growing yet. I think the bulb part is the last thing they do.

I pulled up 3 of mine yesterday, they were the largest ones there and they were a little bit bulbousy, about the size of small shop onions (bigger than spring onions) but they were long, so 3 was the equivalent of 1 onion.

They were very tasty though!!!!

Way to early to pull. They will not have started to bulb up yet.

The legginess may be caused by excessive nitrogen from chicken poo.

They will be leggy if they are in a shady area.  Garlic deffo needs full sun to grow in... I think onions do too.

Neither will be ready to harvest until August ish and as tam said they won't put on their main bulk til then anyway.

I guess there's a reason why spring onions are called that. ::) I have been reliably told that overwintering onions will be ready in June.
Garlic, I would think, would want the heat of summer at least before it will be ready.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
