Broad Bean failure.
« on: June 16, 2014, 17:44 »
I planted Broad Beans last October or November and they came on a treat with a good yield which I've just finished picking and will freeze.  However, in January/February I planted a second lot as I normally do but although they seemed to grow all right there was not a single pod to be seen.  Could anyone suggest why?

Did they have flowers ?

I had lots of pods on my Aquadulce but not so many on my Bunyards Exhibition, they are a later variety . . . they had lots of flowers though and now have small pods.

They seem to be very dependent on the conditions being good for pollination of the flowers. Apart from last year I always have patchy pollination, so beans either at the top or bottom of the stem, rarely all alog the stem.
This year is looking awful, a few pods on Aquadulce, and very little signs of pods  on the (later) Crimson Flowered.

Frost in early May took out the lower flowers on mine and the rain in the last few has probably kept the bees away. The humid conditions have meant that chocolate spot is quite bad on some plants but the dried weather has stopped this developing.

I thought my Wizard Beans sown in October were going to be a disappointment, they seemed small and the flowers were dropping with bees drilling through the flowers.   A couple of weeks later and the beans seem to have doubled in size, and the plants are now laden with small developing pods.  No sign of chocolate spot or black fly.  Very pleased.

Last year I did spring sowings of Crimson Flowered and Aquadulce Longpod.  Had lots if trouble with chocolate spot and had to re-sow several times.  Got a small crop in the end.

I don't know whether it is the autumn sowing or the variety  or the weather or all three, but I will definitely be doing autumn sowings of Wizard from now on, assuming taste is good.

I never saw any flowers but there were loads on the early planting one.
