Black Russian Tomato
« on: April 15, 2014, 18:11 »
Anyone grown these before ? They seem to be growing extremely vigorously outpacing everything else I've sown, even the rootstock Id intended to graft them onto

By coincidence I decided to add a Black Russian and a Cherokee to my set just today. I would be interested in what people think of these. Eg do they grow as cordons or bush - the label doesn't say. Hope you dont mind me expanding your thread Lardman.

I did last year and they tried to take over my little culticave! Lovely tomatoes, even if some split.

Tomato moth loved them almost as much as I did though...

Mine did better outside than inside. I found the ones in the greenhouse prone to botrytis.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I too have bought Black Russian after reading recommendations on this site.  Can somebody give me an idea for a good support for them?  I'm guessing a bamboo cane is not enough.  Will I be able to wind the cordon round a bamboo tripod?

I grew these last year, they were OK, nothing special in quantity (though nice flavour) Cherokee Purple did much better (2kgs of fruit from a single plant). :-)

I would expect way more than 2 kg of fruit from one plant!

Over here, they're grown as bushes. The fruit can be so heavy that usually 2 stakes are needed, one each side of centre.

So what do you expect? I've asked the question before and got no answer.
