Another new (& panicky) tomato grower
« on: June 01, 2009, 20:41 »
Hi all

I'm new to the site and almost new to gardening - I grew cress on the window sill if that counts?

I recently, about 2 weeks ago, planted outside a number of tomato plants grown from seed. this was after about a week of 'hardening off'(?). Anyway on inspection this weekend a number of the leaves were looking a little odd. White patches had appeared on some and others had yellowing areas. Initially this was only on the bottom leaves but as you can see from the pictures that seems to have progressed to the upper leaves now. (Such a lot can happen in 24 hours!)

As I've never grown tomatoes before I'm a bit nervous that they might have 'got' something awful.  A lot of internet browsing has convinced me that it could be the dreaded tomato mosaic virus. Having said that I have had appendicitis that turned out to be trapped wind in the past.

Any help you can give a paranoid first timer will be gratefully received.

Thanks
Yvonne
P.s. my apologies if this appears twice I thought I'd messed up the first one!

looks like water scorching to me , when you water make sure no water goes on the leaves, if water goes on leaves the sun makes the water act as a magnifying glass and bleaches the leaves

My hunch is that it is not the mosaic virus, it looks different from the piccy on the rhs website

not sure what the middle discolouration is, but the last photo could be scorching.  I'd give it a while and see if they perk up
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

middle pic looks like magnesium deficiency to me, very common at the mo :)
Magnesium deficiency causes yellowing between the leaf veins, often more noticeable on the lower leaves.  control with two foliar sprays of Epsom salts (54g per 4.5 litres water) at fortnightly intervals.

Thanks all for your replies.

I'll stay calm  and will try try your suggestion mumofstig. I probably am over reacting but they hardly seem to have grown at all since they've been planted out and then this funny discolouration started.

I'm not sure it is scorching as it seems to be so neat, but then I've not done this before. I'll take your advice and sit it out.

Thanks again
Yvonne
