open pophole/draughts
« on: December 01, 2009, 13:34 »
I leave the pophole open in my coop all the time. The house takes 4 hens.. two beside each other, either side of the pophole.

From reading the threads it seems that they will be OK with the cold as they are hardy, and that popholes can be left open, but other threads say to watch out for draughts.

What is the difference between leaving the pophole open and a draught?

Good ventilation is generally above head height because hot air rises.  Re draughts, suppose it depends on the air flow in the coop?

Just like in a house,  one end of our settee is in a draught, and the other isn't.  I find it very useful for coping with hotflushes! :tongue2:

I close our pophole because we'd have the thing full of rats if I left it open at night, and of course, would always be worried about fox even though I think the enclosure if fox proof.

we close the pophole at night, mainly in case something gets into the run, even though it is covered, we just have a small mesh covered window open, but that faces the shed, and is out of the main prevailing winds, so it allows fresh air in during the night

I've noticed that in colder weather, the hens cuddle up at one end of the perch ... over the nest box and away from the ramp (which we leave open) ... it's a good guide as to where the drafts are!
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...
