Funding for a school allotment
« on: October 06, 2009, 20:28 »
I apologise if this is not the correct place to post .
I run a gardening club at my school and we are wanting to expand it into an allotment. However, we need fencing around the allotment before we can start our project and this is going to cost us around £5000. The school cannot afford this and therefore we need to look at funding. I would be grateful if anyone has any experience of funding a garden and if so where they got the funding as we are struggling.

Many thanks for any replies.

We got funding from Extended Services provision, because we were intending to include work with families as well, not just use it during lesson times.

You could maybe try B&Q too, as they sometimes stump up with materials for projects if asked. it is administred through local branches so you will need to approach the manager directly. try getting the children to write.

Mind you, our plot is quite modest --- it sound slike you are going for a full size one there

A tip if you are applying for any grant is to read the criteria very very carefully or you might waste your time applying for funds you are not eligible for -- very important if you are for a school IMHO as much is ruled out that would be available to others

Find out if there is a health project underway in your area - we have Food Futures in manchester, google it to get an idea - and see if you can tap into it - or if not, contact your local health trust and offer them a chance to start something like it... more money than beleagured Councils!

Look into the National Lottery "Awards for all".  Have a look at the charities commission website and search for ones relevant.  Find a local community based service that has "Funderfinder" software that you can use.  Good luck. :)

£5000 seems a lot to spend on a fence. Is it a huge area? What are you trying to keep out? Cannot your Parent Teachers Association find materials and volunteers to put it up?

Will the dads not make you a pallet fence like everyone on our site has. the only plot with a posh fence near us keeps getting wrecked by yobs, it belongs to a day centre for people with mental health problems so they probably got funding from somewhere. the children would be devastated if it was a target for vandalism. Thanks for the replies, Unfortunately we need a keep people out fence so this is why the cost is so high, also it's a fairly large area we wish to use. This is so the whole school and hopefully in time the community can use the area.
