Shiny Black Blotches on Comb
« on: February 12, 2014, 13:49 »
Hi!  Several weeks ago, someone dumped two Dutch banties in our garden and we put them into our broody ark/run.  The cockerel just developed a big black shiny blotch on his comb and the tips of his comb are blue now.  I have their run partially covered by a duvet to protect them from the wind, but they insist on being out in the unprotected bit during the day unless it is raining.  The blotch is not raised.  I sure hope he doesn't have frost bite!  We haven't had any weather below freezing lately.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

if his comb is blue it could be his heart, see if you can find some bird tonic which contains the B vitamins and put this in his water.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Wet a kitchen towel with warm water and rub the blotch gently. It may be dry blood - our cockerels have been through hen-pecking when new hens were introduced.

Hi Grinling!  I have Vaseline lip balm.  I'll smooth some of that on his comb.  Thank you!

Koperdrake, thank you for telling me about the pecking - his wife has a bit of a go at him every day.  That might explain it!

:D  She's having none of that!  She challenges him every time the poor lad makes eye contact.  He still clucks to her to come for food though and always lets her eat first while he stands over her to protect her.  Sweet, really.  I think they may be a little bored.
