One of my chooks has just laid a soft egg outside.  Is this normal?  I've found soft eggs before but always in the nesting box.  Any ideas why???

I've only experienced one of my hens laying a soft egg once and yes it was outside in the run, not in the nest box. I have no idea if its normal though!

One of my hens lays soft shelled eggs occasionally.  She usually lays it as she is on the roost perch or getting off.  Think they can't control the laying of soft shelled as there is less resistance than a normal shelled egg so can sometime just pop out.

Try some cod liver oil on a small amount of bread to help with calcium absorbtion to help  prevent soft shells.  This is what I have been doing on the advice of other members and it seems to be working.

Thanks for the advice    Will buy some cod liver oil tomorrow.  Wonder if the kids would like some???
