Daft question regarding primulas
« on: February 26, 2014, 10:10 »
I have (or used to have) several primulas in my lawn which appeared every year (I think I have one lone one left!), so I know that they are perennial.

Here's the daft question... are the cultivars which you buy in the garden centre also perennials?  I have several whcih I've planted in my border, and just want to know if I can leave them in there once they've finished flowering, or will they need to be replaced - or could they be moved from the border and be naturalised in the lawn or other area of the garden after they have flowered?

(Now that I'm starting to plant up, I'm going to be full of daft questions!)

They are all perennials, but.........some of the larger flowered ones (the sort you get given on Mother's Day  ::) ) don't seem as hardy as other kinds, here, your climate may be a bit milder.

Not so Mum, we have hotter summers and colder winters (normally) than the UK.  Still, I've bought them, so no harm in trying to relocate them after flowering even if they don't flower or even continue to grow again.

I got a bargain on a new F1

I saw then in one GC at 9€ per plant in a 3inch pot, thought they looked nice, but wasn't goping to pay that when normal primavares go for 1.50€.  Then I saw them again 6 for 7€ in 2in pots in another GC... Not sure if this GC had made a mistake in the pricing, but I bought them lol!

They are lovely  :D

If you plant them out to naturalise, you will probably get all sorts spring up as they are an F1 ---surprises to come  :nowink:

Sometimes, the ones you see in garden centres haven't been hardened-off properly, so you might get some failures, but they are good survivors as long as they don't get dry in summer and yes - they do cross-pollinate and spring up all over the place, sometiomes in surprising areas where you wouldn't expect them to!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You could start some seeds off for another year, but if you save the seeds from those ones as the others say they won't be true to type being F1
