I'm growing Coriander for the first time myself, not sure of variety, but must have got lucky because it's growing happily away. It is in a shaded spot, maybe that is the key :D

I can report that was a good tip Isis.  Most of the seeds on the damp kitchen paper chitted in a few days, I planted them out and have lots of bushy young plants on the allotment.  Since then I have chitted two more batches, planted the first last week and the second today.

I won't be growing coriander any other way now - many thanks :)

It does prefer some shade, not baking sun all day  :)

I have an old stoneware sink (more like a trough really) that I use for herbs every year. It's situation is sunny all day until mid-late afternoon. The coriander and flat parsley seeds get sprinkled onto the soil, given a light covering with soil, a quick water then left with not even daily watering thereafter. They always come through. The coriander does tend to bolt after a time, but by then I have a second sowing underway in pots. ;)

When the coriander bolts surely this is the second part of the production, letting the heads go to seed, ripen and then collecting the seeds for storage.

Yes indeed, but not (in my opinion) good for eating. :)

If you let them ripen, thay are delicious ground as a spice -- but only if you like the taste I suppose

It's a matter of personal preference and the taste buds, but I'm with you.  Don't like. :tongue2:

I buy seeds from an Asian supermarket rather than from a seed company, much cheaper.  Put them out later in the year and I've seen them overwintering quite nicely.

I have tried this previously and found the result tasted awfully bitter.
