How do you space your cabbages and caulis ?
« on: February 27, 2009, 21:17 »
Looking at the back of my seed packs I see I need to leave 60cm(2ft) betweent my caulis and something similar with cabbage.

Can you leave a bit less ?

What do you leave between them ?

Thanks

I try to leave approx the recommended spacings between mine and they turn out just fine, but if you want just spring greens (ie not a hearted cabbabge) then you should pick every other one to allow the remaining to grow on with a heart.

that's what I do and what I read any way!

It's a false economy to crowd brassicas if you want them to do well.

Hmm when mini veg were very much in vogue, I read that planting a bit closer gave smaller heads but overall, higher yield. So, while I agree that you won't get show size heads,
and you don't want to cram them in, or you'll just get spindly plants, I still want to try slightly closer spacings for smaller heads and higher yield.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

The smaller cabbages like minicole and savoy samantha can go in at 15in according to some of the blurb. So am trying that this year. Grew tundra at 15in  spacing last year and the middle row of the three in the bed made hardly any head. Useful as spring green but not what I expected.   but tundra does grow big!!

I plant a little closer but pick every other one so that the ones left are allowed to grow a bit bigger
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it
