In winter I often use buckets (or horse supplements plastic tubs which are like small buckets) as they are easier to fill and regularly top up to prevent freezing.

I've used all manner of containers for water but the make do ones never last as well as the traditional design and it just looks so untidy with old odds and ends used for dinkers and feeders.  Can't help but think these designs have evolved for good reasons.

I've done an experiment.

Had the cheap red / white one suspended in the run and also a large bowl of water, elevated on the floor.

Suspended drinker untouched but full of debris : elevated bowl was the 'drinker' of choice and remained relatively clean!

I have tried all different sorts of drinkers. The green and white ones are very good when suspended but in the summer get a lot of algae which along with our limescale I find hard to clean. I now use the horse supplements plastic buckets and can't see me changing. Stay clean and easy to clean. :)

It's certainly true that algae is a problem in summer but I keep a sponge with a bar of coaltar soap and a washing up brush by the tap and scrub them each fill as needed.  It's useful for handwash too. The white supplements buckets do work well and it's interesting to note someone else uses these handy items.  I also use them for corn and feed buckets for topping up in the run.

Our latest improvised drinker is a non-stick baking tin.

It replaces an algae-ridden Celebrations tub we've been using since Christmas.

As well as being non-stick, it also holds about 2 litres of water, making it untipoverable, while the 3" rim keeps out chickens' feet and debris.

Using the small buckets in the winter also means easy change of water when frozen. This is not the case with the green and white etc drinkers  :D

we have a little trough like one conected to a hose that has a little float thing in it so it constantly re-fills (was not expensive to buy either!) plus one large dog bowl for the ladies that prefer it that way.
