Thois might be a daft question but how many tomato plnts do you sow?

I would like to grow some Heritage tomatoes (I was thinking of black russian) but i only have enough room for 6 full grown plants at most. I know I will need to sow more seeds to allow for failures but is 6 plants enough for  good crop for a family - well 3 ofus since my eldest doesn't like tomatoes

6 plants should do fine, if the reason for growing six is through lack of greenhouse space you could consider growing a few extra plants outside in pots or hanging baskets.  :)
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

those that are going to germinate should have done so by 14 days at the latest, and you have 4 weeks or so to start them off under glass, so sow what you want, and you'll still have time for a couple to catch up if that woud be better for you.

I hope you've got a tall lean to, mine were at least 8ft tall last year.

Yes it's the only available window space in the lean-to. I do have some deep pots so i might try and put a couple on the patio too -maybe a different variety - something good for making tomato pasta sauce for bottling.

cripes - 8ft tall!!! They'd end up getting put outside i guess.

Actually heresa question - possibly daft but i'm not  plant science person - if they grew too tall for the window sill say could i put them on the floor say (even though there is wall half the way up) and would they still be okay with the tops of the plants getting sun through the window? because then you could probably get away with 8 ft - the first 3 foot would be behind a wall though.....

Don't see why not, the action end is all at th top as it grows, just give them as much light as poss at the outset so they grow strong and not leggy.

(It's amazing what you find out when you ask a seemingly daft question!)
