When to tip tomato plants
« on: June 04, 2012, 13:15 »
As last year my tomato plants grew very tall with little fruit, I need to know how and when to cut off the tips of the plants to get them to fruit more.

Thanks.

Pinch out the tip when they reach the top of the greenhouse or when seven trusses have set.
Cheese makes everything better.

I usually do mine when they reach the top of the canes.

stopping toms (taking of the top growing point) doesn't give you any more fruit, it just means what have already set will ripen more reliably.

A  high potash tomato feed should encourage more flowers to grow, so giving you more fruit

Just a thought, but in order to induce flowering in other plants nurseries restrict watering.

This is because every plant just wants to reproduce itself and will 'panic' into producing flowers/fruit/seed if it 'thinks' it's going to die (in this scenario from lack of water).  Nurseries also play around with light levels to make the plants 'think' summer is over and winter is coming....

I'm one of those who think that plants think.  Just a thought..

my toms are about 3 feet tall at present and all very bushy. Not a single flower though. Is there anything I should be doing?

What variety are they, it may be that you should have taken out the side shoots.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they are a determinate or bush variety, then flowers should show at the tips of all the shoots.
