Lemongrass
« on: October 24, 2007, 16:12 »
Hi Folks - I want to be a bit more adventurous from now on, as I seem to be getting to grips with the basics ( with the exception of carrots...mullered by carrot root fly AGAIN ) so I was thinking of trying lemongrass. Mrs.Novice has expressed an interest in cooking with it, and obviously her wish is my command.
Anyone got any advice ?
Thanks

It's recommended to grow it in a pot or similarly restricted, as it's invasive. A few shop bought pieces can be easily rooted in a glass of water or similar. :)

Bought a small one from my local gc a couple of months ago.  It's doing well in a pot in the greenhouse.
Cheese makes everything better.

Lemongrass isn't hardy in the UK, so definately in the greenhouse or on a windowsill....

Raymond Blanc has a south- east asian garden, but that's in Oxfordshire, so I haven't tried it up here, thanks.

My lemon grass ...

... is doing really well and probably trebled in size over the summer.

I prefer to put it on the plot over the summer months and then dig it up and keep it warm and cosy over the winter.

It is quite prolific but if you want to cook with it, give it a year to establish and then start using it as and when you wish.

Keeping yourself and maybe another cook or two supplied will ensure that it never runs riot.

Watch out if it's in a pot, cats like to nibble the leaves!
