does anyone use the Growveg planning tool?
« on: March 06, 2011, 10:42 »
Hello everyone
I've just set up my account with growveg. Does anyone else use this site to help plan their allotment.

No, just a piece of paper and pencil.

There have been quite a lot of posts on this over time.  If you use the search forum you'll find them  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Plan?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I just use a simple spreadsheet, not to do any fancy calculations but just to make a scale plan of my plot using text boxes which can be re-sized, moved around and of course written in.

(New "worksheet" for each year so I have an on-going record of what went where and when; helps with rotation plans.)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I use a spreadsheet too, very useful it is too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, as the wife is often a little satirical about it!

It's only a slightly nerdy version of a pencil and paper job, but much easier for those bad at drawing and good at losing things!  :)

We had a plan once

Unfortunately we never made enough money to buy a house with 10 acres and employ a gardener   :D

Now we use the precursor to the computer, it does text one end and  has an erase feature at the other...............................

a pencil with a rubber on it.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

For want of anything better to do this winter  ::) I made a plan of the beds in Excel and started to type in veg and move things around to my hearts content........ and pretty colours as well  :nowink:
I've lost count of how many times it has been changed, but a good game, good game :)

It is now finished with all the crops and planting distances and follow on crops etc on it, so I'll get my daughter to laminate it so it can hang up in the shed.
Next year I can just copy the blank plan and start again, knowing exactly where everything was this year.

I use Excel.

Benefits over Pen & Paper (in my opinion at least!"):

Easy to change than rubbing out

Easy to take last years and do a Crop Rotation as a basis for the new season

Easy to print out a fresh copy that is not soggy from being out in the rain, or covered with coffee stains!

I find the tool for merging cells to be particularly helpful.  Combine 2 or 3 adjacent cells into a single "Parsnip patch" :)

I used this for 30 days. that was a 30 days trial :tongue2:
It was nice, but I think excel can do the same work (without the fancy pics of course).

Not sure mine would be any use to you? Its a plan of the shape of my beds ... if I understood the numb of your question better I think I would be more help

(There's a "picture" of my spreadhsheet above, if that's what you are after, in general terms)

I make a plan every year and change it as I go along ::)
It all depends what you put into the ground, to what you get out
